Text Messaging SPAM NOT From VPLS.net
Have you received a text message that appears to come from VPLS.NET?

If you're receiving text messages to your phone it is not being sent from us. Someone is using our domain name and masking emails from it sending users to various RX Drug sites selling Viagra and Cialis. We urge all victims to contact their providers to find out more information on where the messages are originating from and send any details they have to abuse@vpls.net. In many cases, your phone provider can also place a block on spam text messages.

Within the past week, we’ve received dozens of complaints about people receiving phone text messages that look similar to this,

"Gabrielle (different name each time) wanted you to see her blog Gabrielle.flapwhat.com"

These websites are NOT hosted at VPLS.NET or Krypt.com. In fact, they all point to pharmacy websites hosted in China. In addition, the from email address shows up as XXXXX@vpls.net (like carol@vpls.net, matt@vpls.net, etc). These people don’t exist at VPLS.

We are talking with law enforcement and mobile phone providers in trying to stop these spam texts. To help us with the investigation please send the following information to our abuse team at abuse@vpls.net

1. The time you received the text message (please include the timezone)
2. The full text contained in the message
3. The from email address (in this case it looks like XXXXXX@vpls.net)
4. Your provider (Sprint, Verizon, etc)

So far our investigation has determined that the spammers are sending the texts through a standardized email address like PHONENUMBER@messaging.sprintpcs.net. The phone provider’s email server doesn’t check the from address fields, so the spammer can make up any address.

We need the above information because we think the spammers are just incrementing the phone numbers on their lists. For example, they will send the text to 310-111-1111, then to 310-111-1112, etc. Furthermore, the spam texts started on Sprint, but have now spread to Verizon customers.

To summarize, the spam messages are not originating from VPLS and the websites being advertised are not hosted by our company. We will update this page as more details emerge.
