Server Virtualization

VMware Hypervisor information

The secret behind VMware is its proven third-generation hypervisor. Installed in tens of thousands of servers around the world, this “bare-metal” program is installed directly on the hard drive and weighs in at just 32 megabytes. Using optimized hardware drivers, the hypervisor can manage and execute more than 40 flavors of operating systems. The virtual or “guest” operating systems are fully-virtualized and are installed as normal. The lightweight and speedy VMware Hypervisor then runs the guest OS at near native speeds. A guest OS functions just like a traditional dedicated server.

How VMware® Lowers Costs

Simplify your infrastructure and dramatically lower costs

VMware can help your company save on operational and hardware costs. By virtualizing many operating systems onto a single machine, you can consolidate the power of a bank of servers into one server. This not only reduces power, cooling and space costs, but can also reduce the number of IT staff.

Operational costs are often several times greater than software and hardware costs over the lifetime of a server. VMware slashes operational costs by enabling no downtime server maintenance, automating patches and automatically restarting virtual machines.

Upgrading physical memory or hard drives typically requires downtime – servers must be shut down and IT staff often must work overtime and come in on off-hours or the weekends. With VMware vMotion, running servers can be quickly migrate to another VMware machine, while the original machine gets an upgrade. After upgrading, the virtual machines can then be seamlessly migrated back.

High Availability

Increase your uptime with VMware High Availability or HA. VMware HA continuously monitors all your guest operating systems and places all the necessary information onto an easy to under management screen. Running virtual machines can be migrated onto other physical servers for maintenance purposes or if the underlying server becomes overloaded.

Server patching is a constant source of headache for IT staff. Not only does it require time to hunt down a particular patch, but patches can cause extra problems. VMware can automatically scan and install patches for all the currently hosted guest machines. Virtual machines that experience problems can simply be rolled back to their pre-patched states.

  • Lower Costs – Of ownership by consolidating several servers and operating systems onto a single server
  • Quickly Provision - And move servers (often within minutes or seconds)
  • Strong Hold – Increase utilization of current hardware
  • Security – All images are regularly updated with patches, so your new server will be secure.
  • Increase availability for mission critical applications and websites with server monitoring, load balancing and virtual machine cloning

Redundancy & Clones

Create clones of your working server configurations and instantly activate them for load balancing and redundancy. Maintain multiple copies of your website, database or other important servers on separate physical servers for disaster recover.

Cloned virtual machines accelerate recovery because they eliminate the need to perform OS and application installs. Moving a server merely requires copy a few files over the network.

With VMware HA, you can reduce or eliminate the need for your IT staff to be on call 24-hours a day for server outages. HA allows failed virtual machines to be automatically restarted. For truly bulletproof availability, failover scripts can be executed that will instruct other virtual machines – residing on other physical boxes - to take over for the failed one.
